Yeah i see what your saying his shit is usually smooth and mellow but for me even Kush and OJ which everybody raved about was not all that even why high. Not a patch on true smokin tunes such as curren$y but i suppose each to his own. I gave Kush & OJ a good few chances to see if it was something i was missing or that the tunes would grow on me but no they didnt. Wiz destined to be the next big commercial success and i dont think he deserves it at all. Honestly, there may not be one single tune that will change your opinion about this cat-- especially if your ear has been trained to LISTEN to (true) music-- rap/hip-hop or otherwise. I dont know where things commenced for you when you first listened to rap and lyricists to create your opinions of what a great rapper or emcee is composed of. I been listening to rap since about 1982-83. So where rap has been-- to where it is now-- I have seen alot of things progress and regress (as of lately especially). I can rock with the cat based on the personality and charisma he might infuse into his music-- which alot of people nowadays call "swagger". HE IS NOT A PROLIFIC LYRICIST BY ANY MEANS. However, Kush & OJ-- for example-- was a very strongly produced project. I rode to that tape day in and day out for probably 6 months straight -- he wasnt afraid to be different while talking about typical subject matter-- especially with the harmonizing/singing he was trying to do. He's a poor mans "devin the dude" in a way. I put alot of my friends on to Wiz --especially the ones that smoke...and we are in our 30's vibing to the dude. Being a smoker myself-- the mood was just what I like-- pimp tight and mellow-smooth-- nice synth's, effects, and drums which made you feel like you were floatin with the dude on this trip he was taking you on. His ability to create these "anthems" and make very catchy hooks-- "black & yellow", "mezmorized", "this plane", "spotlight" are some that come to mind-- refelct his sense of providing you with a euphoric experience for the 3 or 4 minutes of each track-- like you just hit the joint. His flow is a little off-beat, but he tends to surround himself with cats like Curren$y and Big K.R.I.T. (among others) who will make up for his lyrical deficits. This cat has been bubbling on the underground for nearly 5 years now so he isn't as 'new' as most want to think-- I first heard of this cat back in late '06-- his emergence into the mainstream is more because he brings a different approach to the same shit we hear day in and day out-- and being different is what gets you noticed. The business of rap is in need of new faces and fresh blood-- and he has been chosen --by those who follow him-- to blaze his trail. Dont overlook that he has two studio albums amongst all his mixtape work so he is slightly tenured in terms of performing and such. He can headline a lolapalooza or something like that because he does not present an imposing or threatening image of a rapper that becomes a challenge for music companies to sell to mainstream America-- so comercially he can be more accessible than others you might prefer and bring together different people that ulimately will be spending money-- which is what record labels and concert venues want. He is no 'Talib Kweli'(complex emcee) on the microphone--But Talib Kweli will probably never be able to hold a record of being the 3rd most googled person of 2010 as Wiz can claim. He's in the perfect storm right now to blow-up-tuate. Yeah you make a good case for Wiz being 30 myself and listening to rap since about 83 i think maybe im a bit stuck in my old skool ways but its hard not to compare the modern day emcees to the past masters. I really like Big K.R.I.T. and Curren$y but i think Wizs style a bit to sing songy for my taste. I give Wiz all due respect for trying to be different and stand out from the crowd which is not hard in this day an age but for me rap music has to be more street, emcees who actually have a story to tell and no pop singing hooks. As you pointed out my ear has been trained to listen to true rap music and maybe im a bit to harsh on the modern day emcee. To many years of pumping Wu Tang ect has probably spoilt the modern game for me abit but at the end of the day this is still rap music and is there to be compared to the tunes of the past. Im going to blaze up a super lemon haze get them tapes Dninc recommended and try an listen to what this cat actually has to say but dont think il be converted but hope that i am because as you know it is hard to find quality artist to listen to these days.
